Known as the ‘Whisky Route,’ the Machame Trail is one of the most popular and picturesque climbs on Mount Kilimanjaro. It passes through five distinct climatic zones from lush rainforest to alpine desert and arctic summit. The route offers stunning scenery and a rewarding challenge for adventurous trekkers.

FULL ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival – Kilimanjaro to Moshi
Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be met by our professional team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your mountain guide for a detailed pre-climb briefing and gear check before your Kilimanjaro adventure begins. Dinner and overnight at the lodge (BB).
Day 2: Moshi – Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) for registration and introductions to your climbing crew. Begin trekking through dense rainforest filled with birds, monkeys, and vibrant plant life. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp (3,000m).
Trek: 5–7 hours | Overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave the forest behind as you climb into the moorland zone. The trail offers stunning views of Mount Meru and the surrounding valleys. Arrive at Shira Camp (3,840m) on the plateau for dinner and overnight.
Trek: 4–6 hours | Overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today is an important acclimatization day. Climb up to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950m). The “climb high, sleep low” technique helps your body adapt to higher altitudes.
Trek: 6–7 hours | Overnight at Barranco Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Start by conquering the famous Barranco Wall, an exhilarating climb that rewards you with sweeping views. Continue through alpine desert terrain, passing Karanga Valley before reaching Barafu Camp (4,680m) — your base for the summit attempt.
Trek: 7–8 hours | Overnight at Barafu Camp
Day 6: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
Your summit push begins around midnight. Ascend slowly through volcanic scree under a starry sky until reaching Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa! After celebrations, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Departure
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Receive your summit certificate, celebrate with your team, and transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and relaxation.
