Overview

The Umbwe Route is the most challenging and steepest of Kilimanjaro’s southern trails, often favored by experienced climbers seeking a shorter, more direct path with fewer crowds. Starting through dense rainforest, the trail rapidly ascends into moorland and alpine desert zones. Trekkers are rewarded with dramatic cliffs, sweeping vistas, and a strong sense of adventure. This route is physically demanding but offers a fast, efficient climb with incredible scenery.

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival – Kilimanjaro to Moshi

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be met by our professional team and transferred to your lodge in Moshi. Meet your mountain guide for a detailed pre-climb briefing and equipment check before your Umbwe adventure begins. Dinner and overnight at the lodge (BB).

Day 2: Moshi to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

After breakfast, drive to Umbwe Gate (1,800m) for registration and introductions to your climbing crew. Begin the climb through lush rainforest with steep sections that quickly gain altitude. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp (2,900m), set against dramatic cliffs, for dinner and overnight.

Trek: 4–6 hours | Overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp

Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Leave the rainforest behind as you ascend into the moorland and alpine desert zone. The trail is steep but scenic, offering incredible views of Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes. Reach Barranco Camp (3,950m), where you’ll rest and acclimatize for the upcoming climb over the Barranco Wall.

Trek: 5–6 hours | Overnight at Barranco Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Begin the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling climb that rewards with sweeping vistas. Continue through alpine desert terrain along ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp (4,035m) for dinner and overnight. This day also aids acclimatization for the summit push.

Trek: 4–5 hours | Overnight at Karanga Camp

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Climb higher into the alpine desert zone, with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains. Arrive at Barafu Camp (4,680m), the base for your summit attempt. Rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the challenging night ascent.

Trek: 4–5 hours | Overnight at Barafu Camp

Day 6: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

Your summit push begins around midnight. Ascend slowly through volcanic scree under a starlit sky until reaching Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point! After celebrating your success, descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.

Trek: 12–14 hours | Overnight at Mweka Camp

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Departure

After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Receive your summit certificate, celebrate with your team, and transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower, relaxation, and farewell.
